Wondering tips on how to store breast milk safely? Breast milk, often known as liquid gold, must be stored properly and with the utmost care so that freshness, nutrients and anti-infective qualities could be adequately maintained.

Do use small disposable bottle bags to store your pumped milk. Approximately four ounces really should be stored to be a good feeding size in order to avoid waste.

Do label and date bags that were saved in the refrigerator or freezer. Do ensure to work with the oldest milk which has been stored first.
Liquids are likely to expand since they freeze. Usually do not fill the storage container completely, but do leave space, a minimum of one inch, for the event.

Do store milk behind the freezer for up to 6 months.

After these recommended periods, the milk might be bad and cannot be administered towards the baby but discarded immediately.

If storing expressed milk in freezer bags, use double bags in order to avoid spilling or contamination.
Avoid ordinary bags for storage. Make certain that bags you use are specified to keep expressed milk.
When warming/thawing refrigerated or frozen milk, do not allow water to go about the top of the container. Water may leak in and contaminate the milk supply. In the event the water used during warming becomes cloudy, a leak has occurred and the milk has to be discarded.

Always do make sure that containers used to maintain expressed milk are sterile.
